Smorgasbook!

Day 93/365Untitled-4

It’s a book smorgasbord!  A smorgasbook, if you will!

Take a look some of the lovely handbound books that have found new homes over the last few months.  Maybe one of them is now yours?  I’d love to hear your favourite journalling topics and techniques!

Day 89/365
Well I’ve done it again! Today was spent taking a lovely walk on a rare mild day here in Toronto (don’t worry, the forecast for next week predicts -20C as the high) over to the Arts Market.

While this isn’t technically the studio, it’s kind of an extension. And I’ve re-stocked and updated some items, so swing by if you’re in the area. I’m set for 2015!

Top 10 Good Things for Sprouts Press in 2014

Day 85/365

I will admit that I make New Year’s resolutions, and for the most part I usually carry them out.  Sometimes within the year, but sometimes they get ‘rolled over’ to the next year.  Doesn’t matter, they will happen one way or another, when the time is right.

Today, however, I’ve been thinking a lot about all the great things that have happened with Sprouts Press over the last year and how grateful I feel about it all.  I’m also thankful for the lessons I’ve learned throughout 2014.  Some have been wonderful, some have been near misses, and some have been painfully head-on total mess-ups.  It happens.  I’ve learned and moved on.

Anyways, here’s a brief but enjoyable list of the good things for Sprouts Press in 2014:

10. This 365 blog project.  Yup, this little project has taught me the value of time management.  Planning/scheduling and has made me value all the hours in the day.

9. Joining the Arts Market as a vendor, effectively giving me a not-so-scary glimpse into having a retail space for creative wares.

8. Being featured as a bookbinder in a publication about bookbinding!!  You may remember this post about my humble little page in the book: “The Little Book of Book Making” by Charlotte Rivers.

7. Having the opportunity to teach bookbinding right here in Toronto.  I’m ever so grateful to the lovely ladies over at Graven Feather who host my bookmaking workshops with grace and enthusiasm.  It’s a beautiful and welcoming space that you must check out if you’re in Toronto’s west end.

6. Seeing my creations available at various brick and mortar shops in Toronto, but also farther away, (like in the Strand Bookstore in NYC!!  Woot!!).  I’m looking forward to growing this area of my business next year, any suggestions are most welcome!

5. Being a part of the One of a Kind Christmas Show here in Toronto is an experience I’ve enjoyed, and I learned so much.  The sheer size of the show was a challenge in so many ways; prepping inventory, designing and building a booth, organizing volunteers for breaks, and the list goes on.  What I’m trying to say is that it was a great exercise and the lessons I learned are invaluable.

4. I wrote a business plan!  If you follow me on social media you may remember my many posts and statuses about ‘phase 1’ and ‘Passed, now onto phase 4!!’, and various similar statements.  And you may have been one of the people who participated in my market research survey (thank you so much for taking the time, it’s much appreciated!)  Well, this had to do with the business program I am in.  End result: I am a proud business owner with a 56 page business plan!!

3. The ability to sell my creations online, through Etsy and the One of a Kind Online shop.  I know, this is a strange thing to say but just imagine the days before this was an option.  I cannot.  And, not that there’s much to compare with, but 2014 was my best year for sales on Etsy!  Woot!!

2. This year, I’m grateful for all the amazing connections I’ve made with other small business owners and makers/artists/artisans.  This leads into feeling like part of a real community both online and offline.  Some people may not realize how important this is for artists, but it can often be a very solitary life.  Finding people that I trust to accept advice from and share my experiences with is pretty fantastic.

1. And the number 1 good thing from 2014 is being able to take on Sprouts Press full time!!!  Yaaaaaay!!  This is a dream come true for me, it’s my passion and I cannot imagine not doing this!

Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way in whatever ways you’ve been able!  You know who you are, you awesome, amazing and generous people!!!

Bring on 2015!

Merry Christmas!

Greetings!

Happy Holidays, wishing everyone a great holiday season!

I’d like to thank everyone for their business, support and general awesomeness this year as I really pushed Sprouts Press to the next level.  I love receiving your feedback so I can grow and learn and keep Sprouts Press flourishing!  Keep it coming!!

I look forward to 2014, to designing and creating new items and journals (already have a few projects in the works!) and giving you more pen-to-paper options throughout the year!

Have a wonderful, happy and safe holiday!
Cheers,
Carolyn ~ Sprouts Press

Things I Like!

Day 76/365

It’s been two weeks today, since the end of the One of a Kind Show.  I’m finally getting around to tidying up and organizing and in the process I re-discovered all these amazing items from the show!  While this isn’t the full collection of all the things I purchased, these are the items that aren’t being given away.  So if I share them online I won’t ruin Christmas, you get the point.

The roundup:

On the left is a gorgeous stationery set and gift tags by Gotamago, you know I love putting pen to paper and sending real mail, these cards fit the bill perfectly.  To the right of that is a beautiful and ingenious spoon/spatula/tasting utensil by Elzner Originals, I cannot wait to make my famous noodle soup with it!  Then a super moisturizing spearmint-eucalyptus lip balm by From the Blue House with Love, honestly it smells soooo good! Below that are a pair of sweet wooden earrings by Ugly Bunny, the geometric patterns and pop of colour had me at hello.  Below that is another wood piece; a hair barette by The Woodlot, using only Ontario wood.  Right of that is the cute, well-crafted and totally appropriate (for me) ‘book nerd’ banner by Embroiderwee.  And last but not least, a super sweet, cutie-patootie dachshund brooch by Leikey Designs.

Shopping handmade in Toronto the weekend before Christmas is waaayyy better than the mall!

Day 74/365

As you know, I participated in my final craft show of the year last weekend.  Naturally, people are asking me if I’m relaxing now and decompressing after a busy holiday show season, you know, taking it easy.
Nope.
I’m the type of person that cannot just sit and do nothing, cold turkey, after so much creative activity.  So instead I decided to take the day to go scope out a few shows.  Some I was considering participating in, others were unexpected surprises!  I just wanted to see what they’re like from the customer’s point of view.  Let me tell you, it was great!  Buying handmade really is fun!!

To give you a sense of what I mean, here’s what my day looked like.

1.  The Christmas Craft Beer Carnival10418905_782575241812311_1390269032052293587_n

I didn’t actually have any beer, in the name of enjoying the rest of my day with a clear head.  Instead I visited the booth of the lovely Nathalie Roze and purchased one of her warm and beautiful sweater toques!!

2. The LocalTOMarket Pop Up

AdHoc-holidayMarket-web

Although it’s inside a large event tent, it was still pretty cozy at this show.  Not everything was handmade, but the things that were had a nice variety and were well-made.

3. The Collective Show

making-pottery-300x300

It is the fifth year for this holiday show, which I found out also happens in the summer!  Located in the beautiful new Artscape Youngplace, the level of craftsmanship and quality at this pop up was amazing!  And it runs till the 22, still time to check it out and shop handmade!!

Top 5 Things I Learned at the One of a Kind Show

Day 63/365

Top 5 Things I Learned at the One of a Kind Show:

1. Wear comfortable shoes, no one really looks at your feet anyways.  Worst case scenario: kinda-comfy shoes with inserts or orthotics.

2. Eat healthy, eat often.  Lots of tasty, healthy snacks saved me from becoming Cranky Carolyn!!  (and, yes I’ll admit it, the occasional handmade almond toffee, or organic chocolate covered nougat)

3. Stay hydrated.  In a place as large as the Direct Energy Centre, it gets dry fast!  Luckily they had a huge drinking water station with several bottle-filling taps to rehydrate throughout the day.  And with so many awesome body care makers at the show, it was impossible to have dry cracked skin!  (yay new organic spearmint-eucalyptus lip balm!)

4. Listen.  I learned so much from both customers and other makers by listening to their stories, advice and thoughts.  So much has developed from these insights: I’ve already got new projects mulling for the new year, new booth design ideas for next Christmas and I learned some painful yet necessary lessons about when to speak up and when to stay quiet.

5. Enjoy it!  I worked so hard to get this far, to design items I felt my customers would appreciate and get excited about, and to hand craft each book carefully to the best of my abilities.  So why not share this and let my enthusiasm shine through?!  It was so affirming to watch people search my display looking for just the right journal, asking questions and holding the books.  Even more so when they found the right book, clutching it and then deciding to give it a new home either as the perfect gift for someone else or for themselves.

The End

Day 61/365

IMG_1912.JPG
It’s official: the One of a Kind Show is done! My booth is packed up and my house is a total disaster, but I had a blast!!

A huge Thank You to everyone who helped out!! It’s so very much appreciated! (You know who you are).

For now, I’m too exhausted to write anything insightful so I’m signing off and putting my feet up.
