The Art & Craft of Tiny Books: A Workshop

Next weekend I’m debuting a brand new bookbinding class: The Art & Craft of Tiny Books.  There are still a few spaces so I wanted to invite you to join in the fun!

It’s a two day class, and we’ll explore 4 different structures, each one teaching different bookmaking skills.  We’ll re-purpose old books, use fancy papers, and bits and remnants from previous projects.

Of course, this means that there will be time to play with materials and personalize your set of books, making them perfect for gifting or keeping.

Everyone will leave with at least 4 finished mini books, but likely more as time permits.

If I’ve piqued your interest, here are the details you need:

When: Saturday & Sunday December 1 & 2, 2018 (10am – 5pm both days)
Where: CBBAG Bindery, 180 Shaw St.

For more information & to register, please go here.

*Please note that registration closes Wednesday at 11:59pm.

New Autumn

Normally, this time of year, I’m in the thick of One of a Kind Show prep, set-up and organizing booth helpers.  It’s all about schlepping my product to the show, planning meals for days and how on earth I’m going to balance the online shop with 11 hour days at the show.  My heart goes out to all my amazing colleagues steeped in that world right now! Today is the opening day of this year’s One of a Kind and many makers are eager to share that part of their souls that is their creations!  Go and say Hi, wander the aisles and see what your local artists, designers and makers have been up to these past few months.  Trust me, it’s worth your time.  I’m going!  As a visitor.

But for me, this year is a bit different. I’ve decided to take a break from that show and focus on smaller shows that spotlight my craft specifically, and the Etsy teams I’m a member of.  And I’m even trying out a new show hosted by one of my most favourite printmaking/paper shops in the city (so exciting!!).

Take a minute and check out the Upcoming Shows section of my website to see where I’ll be selling my wares in person.  I’d love to see you there – stop by and say Hi if you can!

Don’t forget that I’ve got an awesome Cyber Week Sale going in my Etsy shop till November 26, 2018!  Go here for details.

New Bookbinding Class – this December!

My newest bookbinding class is open for registration!  It’s a fun one that I’m really looking forward to, something a little different than I normally teach, but love making for myself.

“The Art & Craft of Tiny Books” is the title of the class, and it’s running this December – less than a month away!
A bit more about the class:

This two-day class explores 4 different mini book structures, each teaching different bookmaking skills.

We’ll re-purpose old books, use fancy papers, and bits and remnants from previous projects. There will be time to play with materials and personalize your set of books, making them perfect for gifting or keeping.

Everyone will leave with at least 4 finished mini books, but likely more as time permits.

When: Saturday December 1 – Sunday December 2, 10am – 5pm each day.
Where: CBBAG Bindery, 180 Shaw St., Toronto

BOUND Book Arts Fair

Things will be a bit different around Sprouts Press this Autumn.  I’m taking a break from the One of a Kind Show, and using this time to participate in some of my favourite shows that I couldn’t over the last few years.

For example, BOUND Book Arts Fair! (previously held at OCAD, now at the Arts & Letters Club). As a student, this show was the first time I sold one of my handbound blank books and realized that I could, in fact, make some money as an artist.  I remember spending hours making case-bound books to sell for a mere $20 each.  I also remember the thrill of selling my first pieces – what joy!

I’d love for you to stop by and say Hi, and witness this new version of the Book Arts Fair (and at the gorgeous Arts & Letters Club!).

When:  Sunday December 9, 2018.  11am – 5pm
Where: Arts & Letters Club, 14 Elm St., Toronto (near Yonge & Dundas)

For more information, please go here.

Ex Libris!

I’m so excited for a NEW workshop!!  It’s a bit different than my usual classes, but every bit as fun and rewarding.

Learn how to design, create, and print your own Ex Libris bookplate! In this workshop students will learn basic relief printing techniques, using 3″ x 3″ softoleum blocks and lino cutting tools. Simple designs will be encouraged for beginners. Then students will print their blocks in a small edition of 10, in one colour, creating the perfect adornment for their book collection!

When: Sunday March 25, 2018. 10am – 5pm
Where: Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, 180 Shaw St., Unit 102, Toronto.

For more information & to register, please go here.

Sampler Bookbinding Class!

Join me this saturday at the gorgeous Paper Plus Cloth paper shop!  I’ll be there teaching a Bookbinding Sampler class – perfect for anyone looking to learn the craft or expand their repertoire of bookbinding skills.

Learn 3 simple, easy, and decorative techniques to hand stitch your own soft cover notebooks.  First, students will learn about the tools of the trade, then we’ll craft the notebooks.

When: Saturday March 24, 2018. 1pm – 5pm
Where: Paper Plus Cloth, 1340 Queen St West, Toronto

For more information & to register, please go here.

Road Trip to Guelph

Look at these beautiful hand bound, hand painted journals!  This is what students made at Sunday’s workshop at the Guelph School of Art; Painted Longstitch/Linkstitch journals.  If you’ve never been, this is a gorgeous, light filled studio on the 3rd floor of Wyndham Art Supplies in the heart of Guelph.

A big Thank You to everyone at Guelph School of Art, it’s always a pleasure teaching there.

If you missed out and want to join the bookbinding fun, I have more workshops coming up over the next couple of months.  Go here to see what’s next.

Sprouts Press goes to Guelph!

I’ll be teaching a bookbinding class at the Guelph School of Art in a couple of weeks!  Join me on Sunday, March 4 and learn the Longstitch/Linkstitch bookbinding technique!

We’ll go over decorating paper for covers (as pictured above) and then dive into bookbinding.  Suitable for beginners or those who’ve tried bookbinding before.

For more information & to register (only a couple spots left!), please go here.
