A Lovely Saturday

Day 25/365

photo 3

Today I had the pleasure of teaching a wonderful group of ladies the Longstitch/Linkstitch binding.  We were at Graven Feather, a fantastic printmaking studio and gallery, here in Toronto on Queen St. West.  photo 1

I love seeing the different styles and colours each person is drawn to and the details put into each book.  Everyone was happy with their journal and enjoyed learning a new skill!  Welcome to the world of bookbinding!!

It’s workshop time!  This saturday I’m excited to be teaching a bookbinding class at the amazing Graven Feather Gallery/Printmaking studio!  This is a creative hands-on class geared for all skill levels.  I love teaching this workshop, especially when the room goes quiet and everyone is completely and wholeheartedly engrossed in their projects.  It’s so wonderful to see people just let go and allow their unique creativity really shine!

The photo above is from a previous class taught there, a similar class will happen this saturday (November 1).  But it’s not just bookbinding, we’ll be getting creative designing and decorating covers!  Sound like fun?  Go here for more information and to register.

Crisp Transition

When the air gets that autumn crisp and I know winter is not far, I often think of these journals.

They are a warm and cozy light brown leather, with the last bits of summer brightness captured in the beading detail.

I don’t have any in stock right now and I have made a few variations of these books.  But I enjoy the spontaneity and uniqueness while designing and crafting each book (no two are alike).  I also love the bead work and the pop of colour and sparkle on the spine.

The Studio on a Sunday

Day 19/365DSC_0734

This is the aftermath of an evening spent hand-dying paper.  I’ve started using more colours and overlays with colour washes.  I’m pretty excited to see how they turn out as books.  These will become lovely covers for some very special journals!

The Indigo Journal

Day 9/365

DSC_0716 - Version 2

I’ve been working on hand dying papers with indigo over the last few weeks, both in my own studio and at Paperhouse Studio here in Toronto.  DSC_0704

After a bit of trial and error I’ve been able to turn the papers into things like this lovely journal aptly titled: ‘Indigo Journal No.1’.  I think it’s my favourite book in my shop right now.  It’s a handy sized journal, it’s thick with pages so I won’t use it up that quickly and I love the white-indigo blue-brown colour scheme.  Also, the texture of the washi paper covers is delightful!

There are more projects in the works for these papers, so keep your eyes peeled!

Plein Air

Day 7/365

I am a bookbinder, I hand bind blank books.

I also use books; as journals, sketchbooks, idea books, for to do lists, for a bucket list . . you get the idea – I use a lot of books.  But this is my world, it’s what surrounds me and it’s my everyday.  Many times I’ve heard people say that they never use their journals and wish this wasn’t so.  The books I make are meant to be used and well-loved; write in them, sketch in them, spill tea on them and yes, even rip out the pages if you really want to!  It’s your journal!!

But before I get totally carried away with my artsy-fartsy book arts ideas, I’m going to back up to the beginning, to the start of a creative journey.  I’ve decided to write a few posts about actually using the journals I make and how to get started.DSC_0100

So, today’s tip is: plein air.  Yup, that’s it: plein air.  It roughly translates to: ‘in the open air’, from the 19th century style of painting outdoors and one of the main components to French Impressionism.  I also think of plein air as having a strong sense of open air, or open space.

In the context of this post and sketching or journalling, I think of it as starting with a clean slate, in a space that is open.  For me, that might mean actually going outside, to the local park to sketch, going on a hike, or to a corner coffee shop to people watch and do a bit of writing.  I think it comes down to the idea of clearing my mind and letting inspiration come from the moment, my surroundings.  I find that physically removing myself from my studio/office and all the ‘to dos’ gives my creativity breathing room.  I realize that this isn’t always possible; clearing off a desk or table top can have the same effect!  Give it a try, I’d love to hear how it goes!

I’ll be posting more ideas for using Sprouts Press handbound books as the weeks go on, stay tuned!

ps. The photo above is from an amazing cottage trip near Algonquin Park in Ontario.  This is not my local park (I wish!), but I spent a lot of time on that bench sketching.  When I cannot get out to sketch or journal, I go on memories like this one.

An Old Favourite

Day 4/365

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is one of my most favourite projects to date.  It’s something I thought about for a long time before making it, mulling over it’s possibilities and the best way to craft it that accurately captured what I had in mind.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a lovely Florentine cover watercolour journal, complete with leather implements holder. I love that the leather wrap around is a layered, pieced-together band, reminiscent of a quilt.  You can even see the button holes from the reclaimed leather’s previous life as a garment.

This was a unique, one of a kind project and it sold a long time ago, but I think of it often.

Some exciting news!

unnamed

Remember a while ago when I said I had some fun and exciting projects in the works, but that I couldn’t share them just yet?  Well, now I can!

So, here’s my first exciting news; I’ve been featured in this awesome (and gorgeous) just-published book!  Titled “Little Book of Book Making”, by Charlotte Rivers.  It’s packed with ideas and inspiration, full-page artist features, and a tutorials section at the back.  And it showcases book artists from around the world, some really great bookbinding, I highly recommend checking it out!  (Not that I’m biased or anything!)

Stay tuned for more exciting news to come . . . . very soon, I promise!

In the Works

Hello everyone, just wanted to post a quick note to say Hello and let you know that I’m still around!  My apologies for the radio silence lately, but there are a lot of exciting things in the works!  I cannot spill the beans just yet, but soon!photo 1

In the meantime, a big Thank You is in order for everyone who has come out to support me at the various shows, workshops and fairs that I’ve been participating in lately.  This weekend I was at the Small Press & Literary Festival by Toronto Indie Arts Market and the Annual Printmaking Fair at the Cambridge Galleries, where there were so many talented printmakers.  When at shows, it’s always so nice to see a familiar face and meet someone in real life that I’ve been chatting with online!  If you haven’t had a chance to check out one of the many artisan/maker/book arts fairs/craft shows I participate in, check out the Upcoming Shows section on my site.  And keep your eyes peeled on the Workshops section for upcoming bookbinding classes that I will be teaching.

In the online world, I was a featured artisan earlier this month over at Small Batch Magazine!  It’s a wonderful and eloquently written piece that really captures the drive and satisfaction of being a maker in the modern world.  I’m proud to be featured on this all-Canadian website that profiles makers and artisans, something I’ve been looking forward to for a while.  I encourage you to take a read and check out their website (it’ll be worth your time, I promise).  Otherwise, if you’re interested in what I’m making in the studio, new items are being posted to my Etsy shop on a fairly regular basis these days.

One of a Kind
