BOUND Book Arts Fair

Things will be a bit different around Sprouts Press this Autumn.  I’m taking a break from the One of a Kind Show, and using this time to participate in some of my favourite shows that I couldn’t over the last few years.

For example, BOUND Book Arts Fair! (previously held at OCAD, now at the Arts & Letters Club). As a student, this show was the first time I sold one of my handbound blank books and realized that I could, in fact, make some money as an artist.  I remember spending hours making case-bound books to sell for a mere $20 each.  I also remember the thrill of selling my first pieces – what joy!

I’d love for you to stop by and say Hi, and witness this new version of the Book Arts Fair (and at the gorgeous Arts & Letters Club!).

When:  Sunday December 9, 2018.  11am – 5pm
Where: Arts & Letters Club, 14 Elm St., Toronto (near Yonge & Dundas)

The Wayzgoose

It’s the 40th anniversary of the Wayzgoose Book Arts Fair!!

Wayzgoose started in 1979 as a small gathering of friends and colleagues that attracted about 300 visitors; since then it has grown into an eagerly awaited annual event with visitors from across Canada, as well as many international visitors.

The 40th Annual Wayzgoose Book Arts Fair will bring together a fascinating group of private press printers, bookbinders, print makers, paper marblers and other artisans to celebrate the art of the hand-made books – presenting their work to the public, renewing connections with colleagues, and sharing their expertise with the next generation of artists and artisans.

**NEW THIS YEAR**  We have invited ten artisans to present a series of interactive demonstrations, which include: papermaking, hand setting type, letterpress printing, book binding, paper marbling and more!

Sound like fun?  One day only – don’t miss it!!

When: Saturday April 28, 2018. 9am – 5pm
Where:  Grimsby Public Art Gallery, 18 Carnegie Lane, Grimsby, Ontario

For more information, please go here.

Ex Libris!

I’m so excited for a NEW workshop!!  It’s a bit different than my usual classes, but every bit as fun and rewarding.

Learn how to design, create, and print your own Ex Libris bookplate! In this workshop students will learn basic relief printing techniques, using 3″ x 3″ softoleum blocks and lino cutting tools. Simple designs will be encouraged for beginners. Then students will print their blocks in a small edition of 10, in one colour, creating the perfect adornment for their book collection!

When: Sunday March 25, 2018. 10am – 5pm
Where: Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, 180 Shaw St., Unit 102, Toronto.

A Bookbinding Workshop at a Print Museum

photo-31

Just a couple of days ago I had the pleasure of teaching a workshop alongside these fine fellows at Mackenzie House Museum here in Toronto.  It was a combination bookbinding & printmaking class, geared at learning traditional techniques and using analogue tools and equipment.  It was great fun, everyone left with a unique journal they handbound and then printed themselves!

The entire month of April is Print Month over at Mackenzie House!  There are more printmaking events happening at the museum, see their website for details.
