The Studio on a Sunday

Day 222/365photo 2_fotorI’ve been working on several custom orders lately, this is the latest.  It’s going to be a fabric-covered wedding guest book, with really nice watercolour pages.  I’m also making my own bookcloth for this one, to get the perfect colour!

Have a special book you want custom made?  Just click ‘Custom Order‘ on the top menu of my site and send me a note!

Enjoy a medley of red handbound books, inspired by all the tulips blooming across the city!!

Some of these are items that have sold, and some are available online on Etsy.  Read on to learn about them.

Starting at the top left, going clockwise:
Red Florentine Starburst Journal, Ex Libris Bookplates Hand-Printed set of 5, Paper Moon Book Earrings, Quick Notes Notebook Hand Painted in Two-Tone Red, Secret Belgian Journal in Florentine red, Large Fancy Coptic Journal with Vintage Button, Pocket Notes Mini Book, Red Watercolour Sketchbook.

Tall Journal

Day 213/365DSC_0702

In case you haven’t guessed, this journal is pretty tall.  Not too tall, but enough to warrant the title.

Okay, silliness aside, this is the latest addition to my Etsy shop!  It’s actually part of the Fancy Coptic series of books, featuring my hand-dyed washi paper in a rich brown.  It’s a chunky book with 220 pages (front and back), making it perfect for people who go through journals quickly.

As always, the closure is made from reclaimed leather and completed with a brass button stud.  One of the main highlights of this book, and all of the books using my hand-dyed washi paper covers, is the fact that it’s one of a kind.  The process of hand-dying paper yields different results every time, making each journal unique.

An Artists Book

Day 198/365

A couple of days ago I wrote a post about my feature in Uppercase magazine.  Today I’m going to talk about the piece that made it happen, an artist’s book titled “O2”.DSC_0707

O2 is an artist’s book about oxygen. While it is not in-depth, scientifically, it is colourful, enjoyable and beautiful.DSC_0724This project started as a drawing study of the beautiful cell formations of oxygen-producing organisms and their structures. This triggered a curiosity about their function and history, which in turn led to the creation of this artists’ book from accumulated images and information.

This piece is also a labour of love, created entirely by hand.  All the paper is my own handmade paper, made exclusively for this project.  All images are my own, which I transferred and hand relief-printed.  I also wrote all the text, based on my research, which I then screenprinted.  And finally, I hand bound each book, completing this project and turning the prints into an art object, an artist’s book.

Hand printed in a limited edition of 9 books, there are only a couple of copies left.  To read more, see them in my Etsy shop here.
