Variations on Coptic Journals
Today I’m busy binding books and keeping abreast of the ‘make everything in time for holiday shows’ schedule. But I’m also pondering this design from a couple of years ago. Specifically, the bound-in bookmarks, complete with bead and coin detail (or without).
Personally, I love bookmarks in my journals, for easy access to the next blank page. I think they also add a bit of a finishing touch and complete the experience of using the book. But what about in larger books? Sketchbook size? If you have any thoughts on this, I’d love to know! Leave a comment below.

Cozy Journals
Autumn is my favourite season, full of colour and beauty. I love the crispness in the air (it’s the only time of year I actually eat apples, preferably right from the tree). And, of course, it means that my sketching and journalling habits start changing to an indoors activity.
I know I’ve said this before, but I just love the tactile quality fabric-covered journals offer. For example, the journals pictured above are all covered in plaid fabric and paired with reclaimed leather and brass closures. They are cozy and soft, perfect for Autumn notes!

Summer School!

Summer (bookbinding) school classes have been going well this year! If you missed last weekend’s class at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, don’t worry – there are more classes scheduled.
The next class is one of my most popular, it’s a one needle coptic binding, with a bit of a twist! Read on for details.
Deconstructed & Reclaimed: From discard to journal
Learn how to craft your own hand-bound hardcover journal using discarded books. This workshop will introduce you to the tools of the trade, materials, and techniques to deconstruct a book and repurpose it into a new journal, using the Coptic stitch to bind the book.
When: Sunday August 27, 2017 10am – 5pm
Where: Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, 180 Shaw St. #102, Toronto*
*New Location!

Latest Projects: Cigar Books!
If you’ve been following me here for a while, you’ll know that these cigar books aren’t actually newcomers to what I do. Maybe you remember my first post about them way back in 2014 as part of my 365 project? Rather, these are an updated version of a previous collection.
The leather tie has been updated to a more robust reclaimed leather, in a slightly different hue of brown. And I’ve decided to mimic the construction of the cigar boxes from which they’re made, thus using the entire box with very little waste!
I’ve put the bottom panel of the box as the back cover. And the gorgeously decorated top flaps of these boxes are showcased as the front cover of the book. So when the closed book sits flat, the boards sit in relation to where they did in their previous life.

Deconstructed and Reclaimed: A bookbinding class
The next bookbinding class I’ll be teaching is a 1 needle coptic stitch, using reclaimed covers from discarded library books. A great way to repurpose old books!

Want to know what else is exciting about this workshop? It will be one of the first classes offered at the *brand new* location of CBBAG!! Woot!
If you’ve been considering taking up bookbinding, this is a good place to start. I always try to create a respectful and safe learning environment so everyone feels welcome. I’d love to see you in class!
